He Was Attacked by a Lion 6,200 Years Ago. His Community Kept Him Alive.
Near the Black Sea coast of eastern Bulgaria, in a Late Eneolithic cemetery known as Kozareva Mogila, or Goat Mound, archaeologists excavated a burial that has taken years to fully understand. The grave belonged to a young man, probably between 18 and 25 years old, tall for his time at roughly 5 feet 8 inches. He was buried in a crouched position on his side, deeper than most of the graves at the site, with no grave goods. He died approximately 6,200 years ago, during the Copper Age, when the first metalworking cultures were beginning to reshape communities across southeastern Europe.
What set him apart from the hundreds of others buried at Kozareva Mogila was what had happened to him years before he died. His skull bore large puncture wounds. One opening had penetrated the cranial cavity, exposing the brain. Additional trauma ran down both legs and along his left arm. A study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports concluded that the most likely explanation for these injuries was an attack by a lion. He survived that attack. And someone helped him do it.
Lions in Bulgaria
The idea of lions in Bulgaria takes some adjustment. The modern range of the lion has shrunk to sub-Saharan Africa and a small, critically endangered population in India’s Gir Forest. But in the ancient past, the range of Panthera leo extended across much of Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. Lion remains from the Neolithic through the late Iron Age have been found in Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Ukraine, and Romania. The site where this young man was buried sits in Thrace, close to the Black Sea coast, in a region where lion bones from the Late Eneolithic period are documented.

The researchers, led by zooarchaeologist Nadezhda Karastoyanova of the National Museum of Natural History in Sofia, identified the bite pattern on the skull by comparing the spacing and shape of the wounds to cast impressions taken from the skulls of large carnivores in museum collections. The pattern matched lion teeth more closely than any other carnivore, including bears, which were the main competing explanation. The wounds on the legs and left arm were consistent with a large predator knocking the individual to the ground and biting repeatedly.
Two Years of Community Care
The key detail in the study is that the wounds on the skull showed evidence of healing. The bone edges carried callus, the new tissue the body produces when knitting a fracture together. A splinter had fused on the inner surface of the cranium. There was no active infection visible at the time of death, which suggests the body’s immune response outpaced whatever bacteria reached the exposed brain cavity.
The young man did not die immediately from the attack. The researchers concluded that at least two months passed between the attack and his death, and estimates suggest he may have survived for as long as two years afterward. Given the severity of his injuries, including likely permanent neurological damage, he would have been unable to perform physical work during that period. Someone fed him. Someone cared for him. Someone kept him alive in a community where physical labor was the basis of survival.

This kind of evidence has a formal name in bioarchaeology: the bioarchaeology of care. It describes the practice of identifying, in skeletal remains, evidence that a person with significant disability or injury was supported by others. Other burials at Kozareva Mogila suggest this community had some level of medical knowledge, including apparent evidence of surgical intervention on skulls. This young man fits into a broader picture of a community that invested in its injured members.
His burial carries some ambiguity, though. The lack of grave goods and the unusual depth of the grave may suggest low social status. The researchers noted that his scarred appearance and possible behavioral changes after the attack could have made him a figure viewed with unease in death, even by the community that had kept him alive. That combination, sustained care during life alongside a complicated burial, is its own kind of story about how a small prehistoric community navigated the weight of surviving something that should have been fatal.
Does the evidence of care from 6,200 years ago surprise us because we assume prehistory was brutal? Or does it simply confirm something about human nature that has never really changed?
