I recently saw reference to possible conflict between the Norse and the Skraelings due to a dietary problem. Lactose intolerance. The conjecture is that the Norse possibly offered milk based food that caused serious gastrointestinal problems for the natives who interpreted it as deliberate poisoning.
I am embarrassed to put this in here, because it has been 30 years since I looked at the thing and new research is likely available. I am however sitting in a tub reading stuff and your article popped up, so easier to pester you than look it up my slothful self.
Here in Oklahoma, we have a purported artifact called the Heavener Runestone. Theoretically possible to get there via the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers, though it always seems a stretch even for Vikings. Just curious if the thing had popped up any of your readings?
Excellent recap. Please note that Greenland is on the North American plate, so the Newfoundland site is the westernmost Norse development. The distinction helps minimize the racism that too often drives the “who was first” argument.
