Etched into the desert of southern Peru, the Nazca Lines cover around 450 square kilometers and include hundreds of straight lines, geometric shapes, and large animal figures: a hummingbird, a spider, a condor, a monkey with a curled tail. Created by the Nazca culture between roughly 500 BC and 500 AD, they stretch across the landscape in ways that only make full sense from above. That detail alone has fueled decades of speculation.
How they were made is not actually the mystery. Researchers have replicated the technique using stakes and string, producing accurate large-scale figures without any aerial view. Workers removed the reddish-brown surface stones to expose lighter ground beneath. Simple process. Extreme dryness in the Atacama Desert preserved the results almost perfectly for two thousand years. The how is solved. Why is the real debate.
Most researchers connect the lines to water and religious ritual. Nazca communities lived in one of the driest environments on Earth and depended entirely on seasonal water sources. Some straight lines point toward mountain peaks where water originates. Animals like the spider carry associations with rain in Andean tradition. Walking the lines during ceremonies designed to call for water is the most widely supported explanation among archaeologists.
Erich von Daniken made the alien landing strip argument famous in the 1960s. Two practical problems: the desert floor is too soft to support any aircraft landing, and the lines were made across several centuries by multiple generations of people. Nobody builds a runway that way. The theory persists because the lines look dramatic from above, but they were almost certainly made by people who never planned to view them from that angle.
In 2019, AI image analysis identified over 140 previously unknown geoglyphs near the Nazca Lines, including smaller human and animal figures not visible to ground-level observers. Researchers are still mapping the full extent of what’s there.
Walking the lines during ceremonies makes the most sense. One of the figures that is drawn is an orca with an arm that holds a skull. This is far away from the ocean. But the orca is a divine figure, the skull represents communication with the divine, and the attached arm means this god will take your call. So you walk the lines of that drawing while chanting your message.
Figures that lacked the arm-skull attachment likely had different purposes and ceremonies.
